I always wanted to take pictures of flowers but there was always a misconception that you need a good macro lens to capture vibrant shots.It’s not that I don’t want to own a macro lens , but never thought of trying out capturing macro shots with my existing collection of lens.I decided to take my wife to the red butte gardens in salt lake city and try my luck in flower photography.I used mt canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens hooked to the tripod. Set the camera in macro mode (I don’t know why I never tried this mode before). To my surprise the new canon 60D comes with more settings when you set the camera in macro mode. I will be writing another blog post on ‘ How to shoot macro pictures in canon 60D’ soon and you can try experimenting with your camera.

So here are some of the pictures I shot with Canon 60D and the canon 70-200mm telephoto lens . Please add your valuable comments for the pictures posted here.

A little bit about the red butte gardens
“Red Butte Garden, a part of the University of Utah, is a non-profit organization located in Salt Lake City, Utah. With over 100 acres including display and natural gardens, walking paths and natural areas with hiking trails, Red Butte Garden is the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West that tests, displays, and interprets regional horticulture.”

Christmas lights at the temple square , Salt lake city Utah is always amazing. Every year The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrates Christmas by decorating temple square with an amazing lighted display. The lights are first lit the Friday following Thanksgiving and Christmas on temple square begins. I missed taking pictures last year as I was in India for my engagement and this time I made my mind that will visit the temple square with my wife to show her the marvelous Christmas lights.This is the Christmas card I designed for my friends and family using one of the pictures I took at the temple square.

I have been taking lots of panorama pictures for sometime now and decided that I will showcase the stitches together in one blog post . These are the stitches taken at my recent trip to yellowstone National park and New York City (the Brooklyn bridge) . For my readers who are very new to Photo stitching or panorama photography , here is the definition for Panorama photography (From Wiki ) -
“Panoramic photography is a technique of photography, using specialized equipment or software, that captures images with elongated fields of view. It is sometimes known as wide format photography. The term has also been applied to a photograph that is cropped to a relatively wide aspect ratio. While there is no formal division between “wide-angle” and “panoramic” photography, “wide angle” normally refers to a type of lens, but this lens type does not necessarily image a panorama. An image made with an ultra wide angle fisheye lens covering the normal film frame of 1:1.33 is not automatically considered to be a panorama. An image showing a field of view approximating, or greater than, that of the human eye – about 160° by 75° – may be termed panoramic.”

There are two software tools that you can use to create a panorama picture:
1.) Using Canon Photo stitch tool (Usually comes in CD when you buy a canon SLR)
2.) Panorama Photo-stitching using Photoshop CS+ .

Full moon pictures – Photo of the week

So its time for the ” Photo of the week ” . This was shot was taken at the antelope island in the great salt lake , Utah state . I was visiting the island for shooting some pictures of the wide range of birds found near the lake . On my way return , I saw that it was a Full moon that day and the sky was really clear . I took my 70-200mm lens and connected the 2X teleconvertor to it . That gave me a 400mm zoom shot .

I headed to the Alpine loop in Lehi all along to the cascade springs last weekend to capture some fall colors . And to my surprise the fall colors were already getting faded a little early . I drove to Yellowstone National Park two times this summer and it was really a great experience . The geysers were truly spectacular and I was lucky to be on the best time to watch the hot geysers boiling at its fullest . They had a pungent smell around the geysers but it was worth struggling the smell to capture these beautiful shot . Enjoy .

Jenny Lake Wyoming pictures taken at the boat ride at Grad Tetons national Park : These pictures were taken when I was touring the Grand Tetons National park .Jenny Lake is one of the great attractions in the park and most of the visitors try to make it there for the beautiful view of the mountains .And if you are really interested in hiking the mountains , the boat ride will lead to the base of the mountain .They will drop you there and you can head back after your hike .The boating company does many trips so you can avail any one of the return trip after your hike .I personally wanted a hike to the nice trails at the mountain but my schedule didn’t permit .Anyways I am marked it for my next trip to the Grand Tetons .Enjoy the nature picture there .

Taking landscape panoramic pictures is fun and tough at the same time . I always wanted to take landscape pictures (for stitching it later to create Panorama pictures) and this time my recent trip to Grand Teton National park made this happen. I rented a L-Series Canon wide angle lens which helped me capture wide pictures with lots of detail in each picture. Having the tripod added more advantage to these shots with better alignment.
